This study examines the relative contribution of parent and peer social support for issues related to adolescents' future occupational choices and interpersonal relationship.

Why is it important?
Parental support seems to feature more prominently that peer support particularly for boys, even for interpersonal relationship issues where peer influence generally prevails. This shows the magnitude of influence parents have on their children in the Singapore context.
Perspectives
It is interesting how the situational hypothesis that has been tested and supported in the Western context does not seem to generalise to the Singapore context. Makes us re-think the nature of parent-peer dynamics in an Asian society where parental authority is widely respected even in adolescence.
