What is it about?

The rhetoric of preaching--in figures like Augustine and Pope Francis--can be confusing. Scholars often look through, past, or beyond rhetoric to get to "reality," especially concerning the poor. The paper explains how rhetoric about Christ is meant to bring about reality, including that of the poor.

Why is it important?

It has often enough been said that preachers should speak about Jesus, but leave practical solutions to economists, etc. This article shows the unique and important voice that incarnational rhetoric takes up--not only for a church father like Augustine of Hippo but also for a contemporary figure like Pope Francis.

Perspectives

When contemporary persons approach the preaching of a figure like Pope Francis, his rhetoric can be confusing. I personally hope that this article shows how Christological rhetoric shapes communities.
