Why is it important?
Project-Based Learning Increases engagement with students, academic achievement and student ownership of work. It also increases student creativity, and the ability to "think outside the box". Project-Based Learning better prepares students for the careers they will have in the future, many careers that don't even exist yet.
Perspectives
This article describes the journey of two students involved with Project-Based Learning. These students explored Earth's geography and the Martian Colony Project at Stedwick Elementary in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Martian Colony Project started by accident on a hot Friday afternoon with a room full of disengaged 5th graders and disengaged teachers! The Project over the last four years has taken on a life of its own and has engaged students beyond anything we ever hoped for or expected. Other teachers at Stedwick have had equal success with other projects. I believe that Project-Based Learning is the best way to prepare our children as educated thinkers and and leaders for our future.
