What is it about?

I critique the traditional, conservatory model of school concert band and offer other examples and suggestions of how to embrace a model of instrumental music that promotes creativity.

Why is it important?

The traditional model of concert band is teacher-centered and leaves little, if any, room for student creativity. Alternative ideas of instrumental music may better promote creativity in the classroom and better engage students in music-making activities.

Perspectives

Having taught instrumental music since 2002, I have worked in and studied various music programs, including those that are extremely traditional and those that are very progressive. I have also taught in extremely traditional school districts where creativity was frowned upon. It is from this perspective that I critique the traditional model of school concert band and offer suggestions for alternatives.
