Why is it important?
Our findings show that the significant reduction of bruxism episodes by administration of proton pump inhibitor. Gastrointestinal symptoms were also frequently observed in patients with sleep bruxism.
Perspectives
This study partly corresponds to the phase IIA trial, and the results of the present study may serve as a proof of concept for the applicability of pharmacological gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment for sleep bruxism patients. In the future, a low-cost, large-scale research study, corresponding to a phase IIB or III trial must be employed to examine the different types and doses of proton pump inhibitors and to determine the discriminating factors of sleep bruxism patients for whom pharmacological therapy is successful.
