The twilight of decentralization?

What is it about?

After several years of decentralization, austerity policies in Europe seem to promote re-centralization and frustrate long-standing European policies aiming at developing social services (e.g. public childcare) in Southern Europe.

Why is it important?

Empirical evidence shows increased responsiveness, efficiency and resilience of municipalities offering important social services (e.g. public childcare). One size fits all austerity policies seem to promote re-centralization and frustrate long-standing European policies aiming at developing these social services in Southern Europe.
