What is it about?
Onion bulb dry matter content and firmness changes during the storage due to metabolic processes and determining these quality parameters are time and labor intensive. We have analyzed commercial onion bulbs with natural variation in qualities for firmness and dry matter content at different storage time points and chemometric models were built to predict those quality parameters.

Why is it important?
Our research points out the great potential of using hyperspectral imaging as a way to non-invasive quality determination of stored onion bulbs. Feature wavelengths were identified with variable selection techniques and their relation to onion dry matter and firmness were discussed.
Perspectives
The article will contribute to a more precise and faster determination of firmness and dry matter content of stored onion bulbs.
