What is it about?
This study looked at how well an AI program, ChatGPT-3.5, compared to a human therapist in providing text-based therapy. Mental health providers and trainees reviewed therapy transcripts from both and rated their quality. The AI did well at following therapy rules and offering structured advice, but it often felt impersonal and lacked the human touch. Human therapists were better at showing empathy, understanding the patient, and tailoring sessions to individual needs. The study suggests that while this particular AI model could help support therapy, it cannot at present replace the emotional connection and personalized care that a human therapist provides. Future research should expand findings for other AI models.
