What is it about?

Parents of children with mental health problems often experience judgement about their parenting. We conducted interviews to understand how parents experience and cope with stigma. Parents are respected for emotional support, communication, boundaries, role-modeling, and their child’s overall well-being. When children have mental health problems, stigma reflects perceived failure to meet these ideals, but with support parents can find new ways to fulfill these ideals, reducing stigma.
