What is it about?
Suicide remains a significant public health concern, particularly among US Veterans. The Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) serves as an essential intervention, yet little is known about post-VCL contact health care use. We examined contact and user characteristics for Veterans who used VCL from 2016 – 2022, as well as outcomes and health care use in the 12 months following VCL contact. Users rated as high risk by responders, those requiring emergency dispatch or welfare checks, and who contacted VCL on weekends were more likely to use mental health services and experience suicide-related events.
