What is it about?

This study looked at how schizophrenia and psychosis are portrayed in Spanish-language news media in the United States, specifically focusing on Univision and Telemundo, two leading Spanish-language news outlets. The findings showed negative stereotypes in the news coverage, perpetuating stigmas towards individuals with schizophrenia and psychosis. These stereotypes included portraying them as violent, suicidal, incompetent, and weak. The study highlighted that there is a lack of best practices in reporting mental health issues in Spanish-language news media. Few articles mentioned treatment options or where and how to seek mental health care. On the positive side, some articles did include themes of recovery, providing educational information about these mental disorders. Lastly, most articles use person-first language when referring to individuals with these conditions.
