What is it about?
We examined actual (raw) Medicare all-cause readmission rates in inpatient psychiatric facilities, which include freestanding psychiatric hospitals and hospital psychiatric units. Our results show that these rates overall are higher than those in general hospitals, and that rates for some facilities are extremely high.

Why is it important?
A recent study of readmissions in inpatient psychiatric facilities analyzed risk-standardized rates, which do not provide information about actual performance. This study showed that actual (raw) rates for such facilities are not only higher overall compared to general hospitals, but that some facilities have extremely high rates.
