What is it about?
People with bipolar disorder often have chronic medical conditions which are poorly managed, leading to negative health outcomes and premature death. They often have difficulty following through with treatment recommendations including taking medicine as prescribed. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of psychoeducation combined with an automated, interactive text-messaging intervention to improve adherence to medication taking in poorly-adherent individuals with hypertension and bipolar disorder. The results show that participants in the study were highly engaged and the combined intervention may have contributed to sustaining medication adherence improvement and reduced systolic blood pressure. Given that intervention is automated, interactive, and delivered remotely, it has potential to reach a large and challenging population. However, since this was an uncontrolled study, future research is needed.
