What is it about?

The breadth of characteristic neuropsychiatric symptoms of delirium is daunting for clinicians without expertise in psychiatric interviewing and differential diagnosis with dementia. Brief, accurate tools are needed to enhance delirium diagnosis.

Why is it important?

We found that the DDT-Pro diagnostic accuracy was high (94.0%) and little affected by dementia. The cutoff score of ≤6 had excellent sensitivity and specificity, regardless the assessor. It could be useful in routine clinical care settings by clinical staff, irrespective they are non-expert nurses or physicians.

Perspectives

High performance characteristics may relate to the DDT-Pro design: anchored item ratings and objective scoring, straightforward administration, no need for training or interview expertise on delirium phenomenology, brevity, and items representing the three core domains of delirium.
