What is it about?

Is smoking cessation medication safe and effective for those with current or past MDD? Findings indicate no significant difference in neuropsychiatric adverse events among these smokers when treated with varenicline, bupropion, or nicotine patches compared to placebo. Varenicline showed the highest abstinence rates and reduced depression and anxiety in currently depressed smokers. Thus, varenicline combined with counseling is a promising treatment for smokers with both current and past MDD.
