What is it about?
The use of lithium during pregnancy poses both safety and efficacy concerns. The authors appraised the existing literature for the risk of major malformations during pregnancy or the post-partum period among bipolar disorder women exposed to lithium and their offspring. The quantitative synthesis of the evidence suggests that the risk for major malformation during pregnancy is lower than historically reported. However, the benefit/risk profile should be evaluated for on case-by-case bases.
