What is it about?

Its hard to find high quality, evidence-based care for drug and alcohol dependence. We compared our web-based approach to the standard approach--group therapy--and the 'gold standard' of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) delivered by experienced, highly trained clinicians. The web based treatment was more effective than group therapy in reducing drug use, and its effects lasted longer (up to 6 months) than group therapy or CBT. The participants were also more satisfied and learned more new skills in the web-based approach.

Why is it important?

Its very difficult for most people with drug or alcohol problems to get access to evidence-based care; this web-based approach is a cost-effective alternative.

Perspectives

Developing CBT4CBT and working with my team at Yale and our community partners has been the most satisfying, creative, and exciting project of my career. I very much want to leave the field of treatment of substance use disorders better than when I found it, and hope this is one contribution to that. We pour billions of dollars into 'treatments' that don't work, like expensive 'rehabs' and detoxifications without follow-up; this is just one small step in making a useful tool available and affordable.
