What is it about?
It is premature to declare that individuals gravely disabled from serious mental illness who cycle repeatedly through hospitals are futile cases. Many of these individuals have not been adequately evaluated or treatment. Longer hospitalizations, full evaluation and adequate trials of antipsychotic medications are needed for these individuals. An increased use of clozapine, long-acting injectable antipsychotics and engagement strategies like assisted outpatient treatment will allow many such individuals to have a meaningful recovery.
