What is it about?

Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications (LAIAPs) are a valuable treatment for patients living with serious mental illnesses (SMI) like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but they are not frequently used in clinical practice. This study investigated the availability of LAIAPs at outpatient mental healthcare service providers in the U.S. using existing data captured through the National Mental Health Services Survey in 2020-2021. We found that only about 30% of outpatient mental health service providers offered LAIAPs to their patients. This represents an area for growth and practice improvement.
