What is it about?

We studied the relationship between increases in adherence to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and the use of specific healthcare services in a population of treatment-seeking adults with opioid use disorder. We used a superior measure of MOUD adherence and accounted for a wide range of important patient-level factors that could, potentially, influence the relationship between adherence and service use. We found that patients with high (≥ 80%) adherence to MOUD were less likely to use inpatient addiction treatment and acute care (emergency department visits and hospitalizations), and more likely to engage in outpatient services, compared to those with low (< 20%) adherence.
