Randomized Controlled Trial of Self-Directed Care for Medically Uninsured Adults With Serious Mental Illness

What is it about?

Self-directed mental health care is a model that allows participants to access funds to pay for services and goods that promote their recovery. We tested this program in a public mental health program for low-income, uninsured adults with psychiatric disabilities who were not covered by Medicare. After one year, compared to a control group, participants showed improved outcomes at no greater cost for services. They also were highly satisfied with the program and services they received.
