What is it about?
People who have contacts with the U.S. legal system have historically experienced barriers to health insurance and health care services. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) created the largest expansions of health insurance coverage in the past 50 years. This study examined the long-term relationship between the ACA's coverage expansions and access to health insurance and care. We found that rates of insurance coverage among people who have had recent contact with the criminal legal system improve after the ACA but remain lower than rates of their peers without criminal legal contact.
