What is it about?

• Work has long been viewed as valuable for promoting well-being and social integration for people with mental illnesses. • Mental illnesses result in people working in different jobs than people without such conditions. • Our results show that over the past 20 years people with serious psychological distress have been less likely to work in part because the types of jobs they have traditionally held are disappearing. • Policy interventions could target work accommodations, return-to-work programming, and early intervention.
