What is it about?

Warnings that include information about impacts of the weather as well as behavioural recommendations are more effective than warnings that only describe the hazard. The chance is higher that people will respond to the impact-based warnings compared to the standard hazard-based warnings. People also understand the impact-based warnings with behavioural recommendations better.

Why is it important?

Despite significant advances in the science of weather forecasting and technology, people still die and economic losses continue to rise. Therefore, weather warnings need to be improved in warning design to lead to greater appreciation of danger and taking of protective actions. Our findings offer justification for adding impact-based information and behavioural recommendations into the current warnings.
