What is it about?
Mountains have a profound effect on precipitation, but most weather and climate models are unable to function at the resolution necessary to capture the details of mountain geometry. This paper explores a new method for resolving the mountain geometry in order to improve forecasts of precipitation around the mountain.

Why is it important?
Under resolving mountain features leads to less accurate precipitation forecasts. Using this method allows for better resolved mountain geometry without increasing the computational cost of running at higher resolution.
Perspectives
The new methodology will improve future weather forecasts and climate predictions. It is computationally inexpensive while producing better results. As model resolution increases, the necessity to have more accurate depictions of terrain features will become even more important.
