What is it about?

We used the Open Science Grid, a computer resource available for researchers capable of utilizing idle computer resources all over the world, to analyze three years of weather model output. This analysis was used to identify unusual weather conditions that contributed to the rapid spread of a few wild fires.

Why is it important?

With the increasing amount of weather data generated every day, it is important to come up with ways to process the enormous amount of data available to us. We have demonstrated how we used a high-throughput computer resource to download and process lots of data in a relatively short amount of time to learn about atypical weather conditions near wildfires. This computer resource could be used for additional data-processing workloads in the atmospheric science community.

Perspectives

The Open Science Grid is a handy resource if you have a lot of data that needs to be looked at or processed. If you have an embarrassingly parallel workload, you will be happy you took the time to learn how to use the Open Science Grid.
