What is it about?

One of the main ways in which eddies in the atmosphere in the Southern Hemisphere vary from month to month is in a pattern of three lows and three highs, which we call the zonal wave-3 pattern, or zonal wavenumber 3. This paper shows how the strength and positioning of this pattern influences rainfall globally, and how it impacts extreme rainfall in South America in particular.
