What is it about?

The production, atmospheric transport and dispersion of ozone in the area surrounding the city of Naples (Italy) have been analyzed using surface and airborne measurements together with meteorological and air quality model simulations. A summer ozone episode episode occurred during sea breeze circulation has been investigated focusing on the atmospheric boundary layer flow. WRF has been applied to reconstruct local meteorology and to drive the chemical transport model FARM. Model limulation results have been used to explain experimantal data.

Why is it important?

The role of a coastal mediterranean urban area as a net ozone producer has been quantified. The ozone transport pathways during sea/land breeze circulation have been described.

Perspectives

A better knowledge of ozone sources and dynamic in the mediterranean area can support the development of policies to reduce concentrations of this pollutant that is presently exceeding the EU air quality standards over a large fraction of the mediterranean coastal regions.
