What is it about?

A unique suite of satellite passive microwave imagers and low earth orbiting and geostationary visible and infrared imager data sets are combined to provide global near real-time product suite that assists tropical cyclone warning centers and the research community extract storm location, structure, and intensity attributes. These products are available via a public web page and free to the international community.

Why is it important?

Using the Internet web capabilities to facilitate access to a unique suite of microwave, visible and infrared imagery products greatly aids both the operational and research tropical cyclone communities since gathering the data sets previously was either nearly impossible, too time consuming, or required more resources than locally available.

Perspectives

The paper describes the team effort to provide the global user community with otherwise unavailable microwave imager products that greatly aid in tropical cyclone monitoring. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) TC web page radically changed how warning centers accessed and used this crucial data set in near real-time to provide enhanced warning accuracy.
