What is it about?
The numerical weather prediction model AROME is deployed operationnally in French tropicals territories ; its skill for rainfall forecasting is assessed. A comparison between the rainfall forecasts of the AROME and IFS models is performed through various scales, both spatially and temporally.

Why is it important?
It is important to have a comprehensive assessment of the skills of a convection permitting model for rainfall forecast in the Tropics, compared to the global model used for initialization and lateral forcing.
Perspectives
Various enhancements of Arome model in tropical regions are discussed. The most promising ones are a better tuning of the physics, a 3D coupled ocean model, and to perform ensemble forecasts.
