What is it about?

Intraseasonal indices describe the variations of weather phenomena such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation or the El-Niño-Southern-Oscillation in a very simple way, by letting a point move in cycles within a plane. This behavior can be best described by using so-called complex numbers, which do not grow or shrink linearly but in a two-dimensional way in the form of a spiral.

Why is it important?

In this article I apply complex numbers to such weather phenomena, and show that they can describe the corresponding oscillations more naturally than before.
