What is it about?

Relationship between Rossby wave breaking frequency near Japan and El Niño Southern Oscillation in boreal summer, and the associated mechanism.

Why is it important?

Dynamical mechanism that may cause the inter-annual variability of the Rossby wave frequency from near Japan to its east has not been clarified as yet. Although the statistical relationship between the Rossby wave frequency over the North Pacific and the El Niño Southern Oscillation is suggested by previous studies, the related process was not been revealed.

Perspectives

This line of approach is important to further understand the impact of El Niño Southern Oscillation on the summer Asian monsoon and the related large-scale atmospheric circulation, and climate condition over East Asia during the boreal summer.
