What is it about?
In cat-risk modelling hazard is expressed by highly aggregated variables like maximum wind speed or maximum hailstone size. Damage might not be caused by that maximum. For a hail event there is one largest hailstone. The size of it indicates the severity of the event. But it does not directly tell what the damage is to an object (a car, a solar panel, ...) within the footprint. We address the question how the maximum hailstone size can be used.

Perspectives
We use the strategy behind this paper as part of our hail risk model. It goes far beyond the traditional approach to link damage directly to the maximum hailstone size. We are the first to go this way and we hope that scientists will provide more and better data in the future to refine the model.
