What is it about?
Smoking susceptibility is important for the onset and development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this study, we investigated whether iron deficiency is related to smoking susceptibility. After 8 weeks smoking exposure, pulmonary emphysema was induced in mice with iron deficiency, although not induced in mice without iron deficiency. These results are thought to be due to iron deficiency enhancing the inflammation in the lung caused by smoking exposure.
