What is it about?

Bitter taste receptors, typically thought to be expressed on the tongue, as also expressed on the smooth muscle of airways. Activation of these receptors by various drugs (agonists) relaxes airways and could be a novel therapy for asthma and COPD. Some agonists also decrease growth of the smooth muscle, but this positive therapeutic effect is highly dependent on the chemical structure of the agonist.
