What is it about?

Neutrophils are a white cell that invade the lung during inflammation and are found in high numbers in the lungs of patients with COPD. Normally, these cells are beneficial in fighting infection, but in chronic disease, they damage the lungs causing more inflammation. We have shown that inhibitng an enzyme called PDE4 can stop these cells moving and it is possible that they could reduce inflammation in COPD. However, these inhibitors have side effects and in this study, we identified a mechanism that might be a better target without the same side effects.
