What is it about?

This study evaluated the performance characteristics of three commonly used lining fabrics on the Ghanaian market for garment construction. It focused on assessing key parameters such as weave type, thread count, weight, tensile strength, dimensional change due to washing, and colourfastness. Sixty-three fabric specimens from three brands (labeled A, B, and C) were tested. The findings revealed variations in performance among the fabrics, with brand C showing the best results in colourfastness and dimensional stability. While all samples met basic standards for fibre content, weave, and strength, they differed in weight and performance across other criteria. The study highlights the need for careful selection of lining fabrics and recommends further research involving a broader range of brands to assess manufacturers’ compliance with fabric quality standards.

Why is it important?

The study is important because it provides valuable insights into the quality and performance of lining fabrics commonly used in garment construction in Ghana. Linings play a critical role in enhancing comfort, durability, and the overall appearance of garments. By identifying variations in properties such as colourfastness, strength, and dimensional stability among popular brands, the research helps consumers make informed choices, encourages quality control among manufacturers, and supports improved garment construction practices. Ultimately, it contributes to better garment quality and customer satisfaction in the local fashion industry.

Perspectives

The study is important from consumer, manufacturer, designer, educational, and industry perspectives. It helps consumers choose better-quality linings, encourages manufacturers to meet standards, guides designers in material selection, adds to textile knowledge, and supports quality control in the fabric market.
