What is it about?
Teachers are crucial to the success of any educational system and the success of any nation in general. It is not an overstatement to say the teacher is the most important educational resource. The world is not static but dynamic. Therefore, systems in a dynamic world are changing every day. Based on this conjecture, this paper reviewed three educational constructs related to teacher development in a changing world. These are teacher self-efficacy, pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and out-of-field teaching. The paper observed that these constructs are paramount to the success of any teacher because studies indicate their influence on students’ academic performance. The article concluded that these constructs are yet to be taken seriously by the stakeholders in the Nigerian educational system. The paper suggested some recommendations for improving teachers’ self-efficacy, PCK and reduction in out–of–field teaching in Nigeria.

Why is it important?
One critical challenge in the Nigerian educational system is that any graduate can be employed to teach in schools with no consideration of the qualification. This article shows why such teachers have low self-efficacy and inadequate PCK because they are not professional.
Perspectives
Many people who are not professional are teaching in Nigerian schools and teaching wrong subjects. For example, an engineer teaching mathematics and physics in secondary school is not qualified for such an assignment. My perspective is once a professional teacher cannot be employed as a lawyer or a doctor: no other professional should be used to teach in Nigerian schools.
