What is it about?

Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are prone to develop periods of worsening respiratory symptoms called acute exacerbations (AECOPD), which result in worse quality of life and increased risk of mortality. Typically, during these periods, patients also experience increased sputum production. Our data support that the microbiome profile of sputum samples collected during an admission triggered by a COPD exacerbation may provide clinical information to identify subjects with a higher risk of mortality after discharge.
