What is it about?
Infants born to women who smoke during pregnancy have an increased risk of breathing problems including wheeze and asthma. We demonstrated that infants of pregnant smokers who were randomized to 500 mg/day of vitamin C during pregnancy had improved lung function tests at 3 months of age. Vitamin C given to pregnant smokers may be a safe, inexpensive, and simple intervention to improve their infant's subsequent respiratory health.
