What is it about?

ECMO is an extracorporeal lung support that can be life-saving in severe acute respiratory failure (ARDS) by improving gas exchange and by resting the sick lungs. We studied in a pig model of ARDS supported with ECMO how to optimize mechanical ventilation in order to better rest the lungs. We found that keeping the lungs in a near apneic state was the best way to protect the lungs.
