What is it about?

A gene clustering approach known at weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified clusters of epithelial genes which 1) tracked together 2) were associated with specific biologic pathways and 3) tracked with characteristics of severe asthma.

Why is it important?

Severe gene modules associated strongly with characteristics of severe asthma, perhaps most importantly, a module containing multiple epithelial growth and repair genes, in addition to T2-related genes.

Perspectives

These results suggest that severe asthma is related to marked dysregulation of epithelial growth and repair. Whether this is primary or secondary to inflammatory processes remains to be determined.
