What is it about?
Pneumonia is a leading cause of death and is challenging to diagnose. Traditional blood culture testing for pneumonia is rarely able to identify a causative microbe. Here, we used a culture-independent sequencing approach to ask whether DNA from respiratory microbes can be detected in the bloodstream. We found that circulating microbial DNA from pneumonia pathogens in the blood can be detected in more than half of critically ill patients with pneumonia.
