What is it about?
Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is the use extracorporeal circulation in critically ill patients to support heart and lung function and consists of a number of support modes such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The use of ECLS is expanding but no consistent nomenclature exists. This document provides a consensus nomenclature to support clinical and research descriptions of ECLS.
