What is it about?
Surveys ways in which the rulers of the Umayyad dynasty (r. 660-750) attempted to legitimate their rule; in particular, it argues that the basic understanding of "Islam" as a monotheistic religion focused on the text of the Qur'an and the career of the prophet Muhammad was an Umayyad creation, subsequently adopted by all later Muslims.
