What is it about?

Building upon previous literary stylistic models of dialog analysis, this article presents a novel method of speech act analysis that can be insightfully applied to the dialog of fiction to reveal the interpersonal dynamics between characters.

Why is it important?

While there several popular advice books for aspiring fiction authors regarding how to write effective dialog, literary scholars have few formal frameworks for analyzing the dialog of fiction. This chapter presents a refinement of previous attempts to analyze dialog and demonstrates a methodology that balances ease of use with theory from linguistic pragmatics and conversational discourse analysis.
