What is it about?

Towers represent some of the best surviving evidence for Roman surveillance and signaling systems. This paper surveys the archaeology of towers in the western Roman Empire from the colonial surveillance towers of the Late Republic to the frontier signaling systems of the High Empire. Additionally, it provides a reconstruction of one of these systems through the application of viewshed analysis.
