What is it about?
This article compares the processes of acculturation in the Roman and Muslim Empires. A first step is to seek inspiration from modern globalization theory. But, we need to move beyond this, to produce more historically contextualised interpretations. The quest for Universal Empire dominated Afro-Eurasian history between the Achaemenids and European Colonialism. This is our context and it helps to show how the spread of imperial culture was a product of the take over of power by provincial elites.
