What is it about?
The 20 Titanic stewardesses have long been forgotten in academic works. They took care of women aboard and endured the same severe discipline as other crew members. Their duties challenged the masculine assumptions of the seafaring community and patriarchal society of the Edwardian era. Most of them survived the sinking as they were first considered as women, only secondly as unskilled workers. Titanic stewardesses were less appreciated after the sinking than other survivors. During this period many women wished to change their subordinate position.
