What is it about?

Participating in the divine or union with God is the ultimate aim of the incarnation. Both Cyril of Alexandria (c. 378-444) and Matta al-Miskin (1919-2006) ascribe to this notion. Their verse by verse commentary on the Gospel of St John attests to this.

Why is it important?

By comparing the theology of divine participation of Cyril of Alexandria and Matta al-Miskin, two church fathers separated by some fifteen centuries, one can begin to appreciate the coherence of contemporary Coptic (Egyptian) Orthodox thought with its roots in the Alexandrian tradition.

Perspectives

The idea of the relationship between God and humankind has occupied my mind for many decades. The uniqueness of such relationship as portrayed in the Christian faith has, to my mind, no parallel with any other faith.
